The smart #5 has been crowned Family Electric SUV of the Year at the prestigious What Car? Awards 2026. The victory sees the #5 follow in the footsteps of its fellow smart models, with the #1 having claimed Best Small Electric SUV at the 2024 What Car? Awards and the #3 earning the same title in the subsequent What Car?

The smart #5 has been awarded “Car of the Year 2026” in Norway – a remarkable achievement in one of the world’s most demanding automotive markets.

Norway is widely recognised as a global leader in electric mobility, with the majority of new vehicle registrations already fully electric. Communication Design

Even more reason to celebrate: Just a few months after receiving the Red Dot Design Award: Product Design, the smart #5 has now also won the Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design in the “Interface & User Experience Design” category.

The award recognizes the intuitive user interface (HMI) featuring high-resolution displays, customizable home screens, and a clear design language that make the digital cockpit a truly engaging experience. For us, this is clear proof that clever design and modern technology delight both customers and experts alike.

Red Dot Award

Barely on the market and already winning awards: Just shortly after its premiere, our smart #5 has been honored with the prestigious Red Dot Design Award: Product Design – a prize recognized worldwide for outstanding design.

It's no surprise that this car has such a striking appearance. The upright silhouette looks slim and dynamic thanks to the frameless doors and short overhangs, while the elongated front and rear headlights emphasise its self-confident character. Inside, the elegant, clearly structured interior is impressive. And on top of that, there is modern technology – from digital equipment to AI-supported interaction.

At smart, we’re especially proud of this award – it affirms our ambition to rethink mobility and shows once again how design, technology, and everyday usability can come together seamlessly.

Red Dot Award: Product Design

The Red Dot Award: Product Design sets out to find the best products around. With entries from 60 countries, we're immensely proud that our smart #3 was recognised with the Red Dot Design Award in 2024. The car particularly impressed the jury with its sporty appearance thanks to its steeply sloping roofline and dynamic design language, as well as the calm atmosphere in the interior.

Green NCAP five-star rating

After rigorous testing, the smart #3 Pro+ received a five-star rating from the Green New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP). With an overall score of 95%, the smart #3 is a prime example for energy saving and carbon reduction, achieving the maximum score of 10 in the Clean Air Index. We’re proud to do our part in contributing to a more sustainable tomorrow.

Goldenes Lenkrad Award

Since 1976, car magazines "AUTO BILD" and "BILD am Sonntag" have annually honoured the best cars in Germany with the Goldenes Lenkrad ('golden steering wheel'). During the 47th iteration of this award show, our smart #1 was awarded 'Best Car under 50,000 euros'. With both "AUTO BILD" readers and experts deciding which vehicle wins in which category, this award is evidence that our smart #1 is a winner across the board - and we couldn't be prouder.

Our premium all-electric compact SUV won the iF Design Award, known for recognising outstanding design and social engagement, in the Automobiles/Vehicles category. As one of the most renowned design prizes in the world, iF saw almost 11,000 entries from 56 countries this year - which only highlights how our smart #1 is truly the cream of the crop.
